Elvis and Ole Miss
Sunday I arrived in the land of Elvis. My departure from Seattle en route to Little Rock did not come off like clock work, in fact because of the ‘clock’ I missed my initial flight. Undaunted by the circumstance, I rescheduled the flight and finally made my destination some four hours later than I should have.
I met my coworker and we immediately began our drive to our first weigh (sp) point. We decided to stop by Graceland since it was just a few miles off the highway, south of Memphis. Too late for a tour or to actually see the mansion, a photo-op with the famous sign had to suffice. This location, just south of Memphis, is a part of world folklore. I even saw the two jet he used to travel in. The famous one being the Lisa Marie, a vintage Boeing 707.
Night engulfed us as we continue on our way to Oxford Mississippi where we planned to remain for two nights. For those of you who are not up on your Civil Rights Movement history, Oxford, the home of Ole Miss (University of Mississippi), is the place where on September 30th, 1962,Federal Marshalls escorted James Meredith onto the campus to be the first black student to enroll there. I drove threw the streets in town where all of this took place. Twice in 24 hours I touched history. Simply amazing.
