Students at Centre College are taking charge in multiple initiatives during Poverty and Homelessness Week, 11

Centre’s Food Recovery Network and STAND Student Service Initiative sponsored a food drive for the 住房 Authority of Danville’s food pantries. 内森·惠特洛克,22岁, who serves as an AmeriCorps member in the 公民事务办公室 and 社区参与, said the Danville 住房 Authority reported that its pantry was nearly bare. bwin体育社区响应了这个号召.

“Centre's food drives collect items for food-insecure Kentuckians, 当然, but they also raise awareness about the chronic issue of hunger in our communities,他说. “When Danville's 住房 Authority called for help restocking their pantry, our community responded with more than 150 donated food items in less than two weeks.

“Being part of a responsive and generous community makes my job easy,他接着说, “but it's not lost on me how much work student leaders put into organizing and learning about the authentic needs of our community.”

STAND is dedicated to direct service and philanthropy work within the local community.

“作为校园服务型组织的一员, I think it is important for us as the Centre community to realize that even though we may only be in Danville for our undergraduate studies, 这是我们在这里度过的四年的家,里德纳说. “I believe there is no better way to invest in the community that we call home and that supports us in every facet of our lives than to seek to meet its broader needs.”

Whitlock said that food drives are a necessity to help food pantries,

I've worked closely with Emma through the STAND Student Service Initiative to organize food drives,他说. “We've learned that food drives are ordinary and often overlooked, but they are critical for fighting hunger wherever it is found.”

Centre's Food Recovery Network chapter worked alongside Parkhurst 餐厅 staff and met twice monthly to support Soup's On Us, a local non-profit that supplies weekend boxed meals to food insecure individuals in Danville. Since starting in October, students have prepared more than 42 gallons of soup for the community.
