Love Hurts, Rewritten

nazareth

Nazareth, 1970s

I’ve always thought that the Nazareth song, Love Hurts, was one of the all-time great songs about love. But it’s hard to sing old songs sometimes without knowing what you know now. So, with apologies to Scottish rock fans everywhere, this is how I’d rewrite he lyrics from the perspective of thirty-something years later:

The Original:

Love hurts, love scars, love wounds, and mars,
Any heart not tough, or strong enough
To take a lot of pain, take a lot of pain.
Love is like a cloud: holds a lot of rain.
Love hurts; ooh, love hurts.

Rewritten:

Love hurts, love scars, love wounds, and mars,
No heart is tough or strong enough.
It takes a lot of pain, takes a lot of pain,
Love is like a cloud: holds a lot of rain.
Love hurts; ooh, love hurts

I’m young, I know, but even so,
I know a thing or two, I learned from you,
I really learned a lot, really learned a lot,
Love is like a flame: it burns you when it’s hot.
Love hurts; ooh, love hurts.

I’m old, I know, but even so,
I know a thing or two to tell to you.
Though love can burn so hot, you’ll seek it like a moth,
Fly into the flame, without a second thought.
Love hurts; ooh, love hurts.CupidPsyche

Some fools rave of happiness,
Blissfulness, togetherness,
Some fools fool themselves, I guess
They’re not foolin’ me.

Some fools hope love’s sweet caress,
Will lead to only happiness,
Fools will fool themselves, I guess,
But listen, fool, to me–

Lost_LoveI know it isn’t true, I know it isn’t true,
Love is just a lie made to make you blue.
Love hurts, ooh, love hurts.

I know it isn’t true, know it isn’t true,
Can’t have the sweet of love, without the bitter too.
Love hurts; ooh, love hurts.
