American Idol Journal – Week 9 (Top 5)

"Oh please, don't vote me off!"

If I hear the phrase “In it to win it!” one more time I’m gonna scream. The only thing I can tell you is that when you hear such a well choreographed message like tonight it mean they are trying to manufacture some excitement, instead of simply letting it happen on its own.

The first TWO SONG NIGHT of the season was on tap.  In the first round of songs, James Durbin and Jacob Lusk completely tanked.  I’ve never heard James so off pitch this entire season.  Sometimes it’s best to stay on the stage and focus on the singing instead of ‘the performance’.  Jacob Lusk sings Jordin Sparks? Not only a bad decision but in the end the song was poorly done.  Again, Lusk was his typical pitchie self.

I thought Lauren Alaina was solid in her first outing, she looked good and worked the stage well.  AND THEN CAME SCOTTY!  Scotty McCreery absolutely owned the first round of singing.  I thought it was as close to an American Idol moment as it gets.  Look out Garth Brooks.

Finally Haley Reinhart sang the unreleased Lady Gaga tune. Of course I never heard the song but, and this is a big but, I thought she performed it amazingly. It was also clear by the judges comments that they don’t want her going much further in the competition.

Round two, again James Durbin was terrible.  It was all the judges could do to salvage his performance by saying with ‘honest’.  Don’t get me wrong, if you’ve been following AFDN’s American Idol Journal this season you know I’m an enthusiastic Durbin fan, but this was a two strike out night for James.

Jacob Lusk has got to go.  Song two, a song by Nazareth, was bad on several fronts.  It was pitchie, uneventful and and uninspiring. Still the judges couldn’t just tell him it was terribly, he had to be propped up with disingenuous fluff.

Lauren Alaina, what can I say about tonight’s second song?  Not to over use a word but it was uneventful, karaoke, predictable and borderline BAD.  Scotty McCreery, following up an amazing first song, pretty much lost me on his second tune. It was boring and off pitch in places.  Disappointing.

Haley Reinhart sang “House of the Rising Sun”.  One word, fabulous!  Between her first song and her second Haley won the night.

Standout performances tonight by Haley Reinhart (both songs) and Scotty McCreery (first song only though)

Average performances of the night goes to Lauren Alaina because her first song was solid.

Disappointing performances of the night… James Durbin.  Ouch James.

“No big surprise” bad performer goes to Jacob Lusk.

Look for the bottom three this week to be Jacob Lusk, Lauren Alaina, Haley Reinhart.  Don’t get me wrong, I think Haley could steal away a finalist spot but I’m not confident she’ll get the voter support in time.  I’m hoping against hope that American sends Jacob Lusk home tomorrow night.

Do me a favor and leave a comment here at AFDN, anything is appreciated.
